North Perth’s Council Composition and Ward Boundaries Review

MEDIA RELEASE

The Municipality of North Perth has retained Watson & Associates Economists Ltd. in association with Dr. Robert J. Williams to conduct a comprehensive and independent Council Composition and Ward Boundary Review. This review will try to identify fair and equitable electoral ward boundaries for the 2026 municipal election and beyond.

The review will begin with a thorough evaluation of both the present composition of Council and the wards for electing those Councillors as the basis for developing possible alternative ward boundary configurations. Information will be presented to residents in a consultation process, including multiple in-person and virtual community information sessions.

Each of North Perth’s three wards is a defined geographical area and every house and property in North Perth falls within one of those specific wards. As the Municipality continues to grow and change, the ward boundaries may need to be adjusted so that each ward Councillor represents a similar number of residents. “This review is an opportunity for the community to come together and evaluate citizen representation and ward boundaries,” explained North Perth’s Clerk/Legislative Services Supervisor, Lindsay Cline. “Residents will help decide if change is needed for fair and effective representation as North Perth continues to grow.”

The Municipality of North Perth has a Mayor and Deputy Mayor that are elected at-large and there are 8 Councillors elected in three separate wards. The Mayor, Deputy Mayor and one of the 8 local councillors (appointed by Council) also sit on the Perth County Council.

Based on the results of the consultation process and the technical analysis conducted by the consultant team, the public will have an opportunity to comment on possible alternatives in the Spring and Fall of 2023. Recommendations are anticipated to be presented to Council in the Winter of 2023.

Opportunities for residents to learn about the review and to contribute their views will be provided at www.northperth.ca/ccwbr and www.yoursaynorthperth.ca.
