North Perth introduces Additional Residential Units Registration program

At the April 17, 2023 regular Council meeting, North Perth Council approved the implementation of the Additional Residential Unit (ARU) Registration program. The purpose of the program is to promote consumer safety, as well as ensure ARUs are known to Emergency Services.

ARUs are self-contained units with a private kitchen, bathroom facilities and sleeping areas. ARUs are different from other residential uses because they are clearly accessory to the primary dwelling on the property in both use and appearance. ARUs come in many forms and can be located within the primary dwelling, within other structures or as a standalone structure.

The support and promotion of ARUs is an initiative included in the Housing Workplan that the Council of the Municipality of North Perth approved in late 2022.  In addition to the ARU Registration Program, an Additional Residential Units (ARUs) Guide has also been developed to support property owners in constructing an ARU on their property. Visit www.northperth.ca/ARU to view the guide and learn more about the benefits of ARUs.

In an effort to encourage the creation of more diverse and higher density housing options and promote the benefits of ARUs, Council approved that a 1-year moratorium on ARU registration fees be implemented and in place until April 17, 2024.

Property owner(s) of an ARU must obtain a building permit for each ARU on their property and complete all necessary final inspections. Apply to register your ARU(s) by completing the application form available online: www.northperth.ca/CRP.
