MEDIA RELEASE
North Perth Fire Department Expands Safety Initiatives and Training Opportunities
North Perth, February 6, 2025 – The North Perth Fire Department is pleased to announce the endorsement of mitigation strategies intended to reduce grain bin and silo emergencies in our community. Strategies approved by North Perth Council at its December 16, 2024, meeting include: the creation of a public safety announcement focused on grain bin safety, continued collaboration with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, the promotion of low-cost Confined Space Awareness, and Lock-Out Tag-Out course offerings locally, and the addition of six 4-gas meters available for loan from the North Perth Public Library.
The North Perth Fire Department has not historically provided confined space and high-angle rescue. According to data provided by the Office of the Fire Marshal, as few as three volunteer fire departments in Ontario provided this level of service in 2023. Training requirements to provide confined space and high-angle rescue are significant and beyond the capacity of North Perth’s volunteer firefighting complement.
The North Perth Fire Department (NPFD) remains committed to delivering fire protection services guided by three lines of defense: public fire safety education, standards and enforcement, and emergency fire response. The mitigation strategies approved by Council focus on educating and engaging those who may work in and around grain bins and silos.
Those interested in participating in Confined Space Entry and/or Lock-Out Tag Out training courses are encouraged to register by visiting www.set7.ca or emailing set7@northperth.ca. Both courses will be offered at the Elma Memorial Community Centre in Atwood in early March. In April, 4-gas meters will be available for loan at the three branches of the North Perth Public Library.
Manager of Development & Protective Services/Fire Chief Janny Pape expressed her gratitude to Council for its support and emphasized the North Perth Fire Department’s dedication to continuous improvement in service delivery.
