North Perth and partner municipalities continue action on climate change and resilience

The Municipality of North Perth, in partnership with the Municipality of West Perth, Township of Perth East, Township of Perth South, County of Perth, City of Stratford, and Town of St. Marys, is happy to announce the hiring of Amara Kartick for the position of Climate Change Coordinator. Amara previously worked for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and was responsible for project planning and management of integration of climate change priorities within the agricultural sector. Amara is a graduate of the University of Guelph with an Honours Bachelor of Bio-Resources Science and a Masters of Environmental Science.

The Climate Change Coordinator position is being supported by grant funding totalling $110,400 from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) Climate change staff grants initiative, as well as municipal funding from each participating municipality.

The focus of the new Climate Change Coordinator will be the completion and implementation of the Perth County Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Reduction Plan. The development of the GHG Emissions Reduction Plan began in mid-2019 and has been a large and complex project, specifically in relation to the collection of local community emission data and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the public consultation process.

It is anticipated that the final Plan will be presented to the participating Municipal Councils before the end of the summer. Members of the public are encouraged to watch for opportunities to involve themselves in the implementation of the plan in their communities.
