MEDIA RELEASE
Listowel Memorial Arena Park ‘59 Official Opening
North Perth, February 28, 2025 – The Municipality of North Perth is proud to announce the official opening of the Memorial Arena Park, a commemorative space honouring the lives lost in the tragic collapse of the Listowel Arena structure in 1959. This community park stands on the site of the former Listowel Memorial Arena, serving as a lasting tribute to the victims, their families, and the resilience of our community in the face of adversity.
On Saturday, February 28, 1959, at approximately 9:27 am, tragedy struck during a peewee hockey practice at the Listowel Arena, claiming the lives of seven young hockey players and one adult. Thirteen others were injured when the roof and walls of the rink section collapsed, leaving a legacy of grief and remembrance.
Now, 66 years later, the community gathered on the site, to open a place of reflection, hope, and community. Through dedicated efforts and the generosity of our community, the MAP59 Committee has successfully raised over $850,000 to bring this park to life. The newly established Memorial Arena Park features:
- Bronze Skates: Memorial sculptures symbolizing the lives and passion for hockey of those lost.
- Memorial Trees: Planted to create a living tribute, offering shade and tranquility.
- Open Lawn and Winter Ice Space: A versatile area for recreation and community events.
The Listowel Memorial Arena Park will stand as a testament to the resilience and unity of the community, honoring the past while providing a space for present and future generations to come together, reflect, and enjoy.
"It was truly an honour for SHIFT to be the designers of Memorial Arena Park '59 (MAP '59). The project was deeply meaningful as we had the privilege of working closely with the local community and survivors to ensure their voices were heard and reflected in the design. The collaboration allowed us to create a space that not only honors the past but also celebrates resilience and healing. MAP '59 stands as a testament to the strength and spirit of those who contributed their insights and memories to shape this special place,” said Michael Barker of SHIFT Landscape Architecture.
"The official opening of the Memorial Arena Park and the ceremony that was held today not only serves as a heartfelt memorial to cherish and remember those we lost but also stands as a beacon of hope and positivity for our community. We envision this space as a source of joy, recreation, and coming together for our residents for many years to come," said Jeff Newell, Manager of Facilities.
The Municipality of North Perth would like to thank the MAP59 Committee for their continuous effort, the community members for their attendance at the event, and their continued support in creating a living memory space.
