Frequently Asked Questions
Please visit our Building Department Fees page which outlines all costs associated with building permits.
What documents are required for a building permit application?
Visit the Forms and Documents page to view the chart outlining the documents and forms you may need to submit with your permit application.
How can I contact a building inspector?
If you have applied for a permit the best course of communication is through the CloudPermit messaging platform. The inspectors are operating in CloudPermit throughout the workday both in office and on site and it’s the quickest and easiest way to communicate with them.
The CloudPermit software enables you to conveniently schedule an inspection directly within the program. Select the inspection you need, then choose your preferred inspection date in the calendar. Inspections are required to be requested prior to 3:00 pm on the business day before the desired inspection date. Inspections will be confirmed after 3:00 pm on that business day.
How long does the permit approval process take?
The building process and timeline are located on our Applying for a Building Permit page.
How do I ensure my project doesn't conflict with local zoning laws?
Check our Zoning webpage for access to the Municipality's Zoning Maps. Once you've identified your property's zoning classification, refer to the Zoning By-Law to find out what rules apply in that zone such as:
- Where buildings and other structures can be located
- The types of buildings that are permitted and how they may be used
- The lot sizes and dimensions, parking requirements, building heights and densities (the number of people, jobs and building floor area per hectare), and setbacks from the street
- What percentage of a lot can be covered with building and structures
How do I get a copy of my property survey?
If you are putting up a fence, building a structure, or having a dispute with your neighbour, you need to know where your property lines are located. Only an Ontario Land Surveyor can provide you with a survey of your property. The Municipality does not keep land surveys on file.
To find an Ontario Land Surveyor, visit the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors.
