Demolition

Demolition in Ontario involves the careful dismantling of structures, adhering to the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and local regulations. This process applies to various types of buildings, including residential, commercial, and industrial, regardless of their size.

The OBC mandates that a demolition permit be obtained prior to starting any work, ensuring that safety and environmental standards are met. Key considerations include the removal of hazardous materials, proper utility disconnection, and waste management plans for debris disposal. Some types of construction require the assistance of an engineer to avoid unexpected pressure or tension in the way parts of the building come apart or fall.

Please be aware that while agricultural buildings do not require a building permit, applying for one is highly recommended. Doing so helps ensure adherence to proper procedures and safety measures, while also expediting the process for MPAC to receive updated information that may affect your property taxes.

If you plan to take your debris to the Elma Landfill, it is strongly recommended to call ahead and inform them in advance. This will help ensure proper disposal procedures and avoid any unexpected delays.

Ensuring the current property owner grants permission to either construct themselves or to have another party, such as a contractor or builder, to apply for and manage a building permit on their behalf.

A demolition form for a building permit is a required document that provides details about the structure to be demolished, the method of demolition, and how debris will be disposed of, ensuring compliance with local safety and environmental regulations.
